NEH SUMMER INSTITUTE FOR TEACHERS

Join the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center for an extraordinary one-week National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute for (K-12) school teachers.
June 14-20 and July 5-11, 2020

The application deadline for the institute is March 1, 2020.

Mesa Verde National Park and Pueblo Indian History is a one-week workshop for 36 K–12 educators focused on the following questions: 1) How do we come to know and appreciate the time depth, people, and activities that comprise the past and shaped our contemporary world? 2) Who creates America’s history and culture? 3) How do Pueblo people balance their cultural identity with ideals of assimilation? The Workshop offers historic and multicultural perspectives using Mesa Verde National Park and the surrounding region—home to humans for over 13,000 years and containing some of the world’s greatest archaeological and cultural data.

Institute Highlights:

  • Visits to Mesa Verde National Park and a behind-the-scenes curation tour
  • Participate in Prehispanic archaeological excavation and laboratory analyses
  • Interact and learn from native scholars and professional archaeologists

You will investigate this history through anthropology, archaeology, American Indian studies, ethnohistory, and oral history. The interpretations of this information from the perspectives of both Pueblo scholars and Western scientists will be examined carefully to allow you to determine if and how the bodies of information are compatible, and how multi-vocal interpretations of history may influence the understanding of Pueblo identity and how it is presented in today’s classrooms.
